If you’re planning a California road trip, driving along Highway 1 through Big Sur is one of the most unforgettable stretches you’ll experience. I started my journey in San Francisco and headed south, making spontaneous stops that turned out to be the real highlights. From rugged coastlines to hidden waterfalls, here’s everything I loved along the way.

📍 Point Lobos State Natural Reserve
I kicked things off at Point Lobos State Natural Reserve, and honestly, you could spend an entire day here. We hiked to the Sea Lion Point Lookout, where the views were absolutely unreal – jagged cliffs, crashing waves, and endless blue water.
While we didn’t spot any sea lions this time (you can rent binoculars at the entrance!), the coastline alone made it worth it. If you’re into nature, wildlife, or photography, this spot is a must.

🌉 Bixby Creek Bridge
A must-see along this drive is Bixby Creek Bridge. The bridge is iconic and offers stunning views of the cliffs and the Pacific Ocean. It’s one of those spots where you just have to pull over and take it in, even if it’s just for a few minutes.

🥪 Big Sur Deli
As far as food goes, there aren’t a ton of food options along the way. We drove by this casual deli and got some sandwiches, they were perfect. Definitely recommend grabbing a bite here before continuing on your drive.

🌊 McWay Falls at Julia Pfeiffer Burns State Park
One of the most breathtaking sights along Big Sur is McWay Falls, a rare 80-foot waterfall that flows straight into the Pacific Ocean. The viewpoint is easy to access, and it’s one of the most photographed spots for good reason. You won’t want to miss this.

🪵 Big Sur River Inn
Need a peaceful break? Big Sur River Inn is the perfect spot to unwind. There are chairs set up right in the river (yes, in the river), so you can kick back, dip your feet in the cool water, and just relax. It’s a simple pleasure that really sticks with you.
🌅 Sunset at Monastery Beach
I ended the day watching the sunset at Monastery Beach, and it was the perfect way to wrap things up. It’s a quiet, uncrowded spot where you can sit by the water and watch the sun dip below the horizon. Peaceful, simple, and a beautiful place to take it all in after a long day on the road.

🚗 Spontaneous Stops Along Highway 1
The beauty of this drive is that there’s no strict itinerary. Some of the best parts were the unplanned stops – pulling over for a quiet viewpoint, discovering a hidden trail, or just watching the waves crash below. If something catches your eye, stop and explore. That’s the magic of Highway 1.
✨ Road Trip Tips for Big Sur
- Fuel Up: Gas stations are sparse, so fill your tank before starting the drive.
- Pack Snacks: Food options are limited, so either pack your own or plan a stop at places like Big Sur Deli.
- Take Your Time: Highway 1 is all about enjoying the drive. Take your time and stop when you see something that catches your eye.
